โครงการพัฒนาพื้นที่บริเวณวัดมงคลชัยพัฒนา อันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ
เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2531 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงมีพระราชกระแสให้ นายสุเมธ ตันติเวชกุล นายมนูญ มุกข์ประดิษฐ์ และนายพิมลศักดิ์ สุวรรณทัต กรรมการมูลนิธิชัยพัฒนา พิจารณาจัดซื้อที่ดินที่ติดกับวัดมงคล ตำบลห้วยบง อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดสระบุรี โดยต่อมาพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานนามจากวัดมงคลเป็นวัดมงคลชัยพัฒนา เมื่อวันที่ 3 ตุลาคม 2535 เป็นต้นมา

จากพระราชกระแสข้างต้นมูลนิธิชัยพัฒนาจึงได้จัดซื้อและมีผู้บริจาคที่ดินบริเวณดังกล่าวรวม 32 - 0 - 47 ไร่ เพื่อนำมาพัฒนาการเกษตรตามแนว ทฤษฎีใหม่ ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยให้ใช้สถานที่ดังกล่าวดำเนิน โครงการพัฒนาพื้นที่บริเวณวัดมงคลชัยพัฒนาอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ เพื่อให้เป็นศูนย์สาธิตการดำเนินเกษตรทฤษฎีใหม่อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม สามารถให้เกษตรกรนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ปฏิบัติในพื้นที่ของตนได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ สามารถพึ่งพาตนเองได้อย่างพออยู่พอกิน ซึ่งโครงการดังกล่าวนับเป็นจุดกำเนิดของ เกษตรทฤษฎีใหม่ แห่งแรกในประเทศไทย
โครงการพัฒนาพื้นที่บริเวณวัดมงคลชัยพัฒนาฯ แบ่งพื้นที่ดำเนินงานออกเป็น 2 ส่วนคือ
ส่วนที่หนึ่ง แปลงสาธิตการเกษตรแบบผสมผสาน จำนวน 16-2-23 ไร่ ดำเนินการทดสอบและพัฒนาระบบการปลูกพืชผักสวนครัวในรูปแบบต่างๆ อาทิ สวนพืชตระกูลมะ สวนพืชสมุนไพร สวนผลไม้ในที่ดอน สวนพรรณไม้หอมเฉลิมพระเกียรติ รวมถึงการขุดสระน้ำสำหรับเลี้ยงปลาและปลูกหญ้าแฝกเพื่อป้องกันการชะล้างพังทลายของดิน เป็นต้น
ส่วนที่สอง แปลงสาธิตเกษตรทฤษฎีใหม่ จำนวน 15-2-24 ไร่ แบ่งพื้นที่ดำเนินงานตามแนวพระราชดำริทฤษฎีใหม่ โดยแบ่งพื้นที่ออกเป็น 4 ส่วน คือ 30-30-30-10 โดยสัดส่วนดังกล่าวได้นำมาปรับตามความเหมาะสมของสภาพพื้นที่ของวัดมงคลชัยพัฒนา ในสัดส่วน 16-35.5-24.5-24 โดยแต่ละส่วนประกอบด้วย
ส่วนที่หนึ่ง ร้อยละ 16 พื้นที่ประมาณ 2.5 ไร่ ดำเนินการขุดสระกักเก็บน้ำขนาด 55 เมตร ยาว 71 เมตร ลึก 5 เมตร สามารถเก็บกักน้ำได้ประมาณ 18,000 ลูกบาศก์เมตร เพื่อนำน้ำมาไว้ใช้ในฤดูแล้ง นอกจากนี้ในสระยังได้เลี้ยงปลานิลและปลาตะเพียน เพื่อเป็นรายได้เสริมอีกทางหนึ่ง
ส่วนที่สอง ร้อยละ 35.5 พื้นที่ประมาณ 5.5 ไร่ พัฒนาพื้นที่เป็นแปลงนาข้าว โดยหลังฤดูเก็บเกี่ยวสามารถปรับสภาพดินเพื่อทำการปลูกพืชไร่ พืชผักชนิดต่างๆ เช่น ข้าวโพดหวาน มะระ ถั่วเขียว เป็นต้น
ส่วนที่สาม ร้อยละ 24.5 พื้นที่ประมาณ 3.8 ไร่ ทำการเกษตรอื่นๆ เช่น ปลูกพืชไร่ ไม้ผล ไม้ยืนต้น และพืชสมุนไพร เพื่อใช้เป็นอาหารประจำวัน หากเหลือจากการนำบริโภคก็นำไปจำหน่าย โดยเลือกปลูกให้เหมาะสมกับสภาพแวดล้อมและความต้องการของตลาด ตัวอย่างของพืชที่ปลูกคือ อ้อย กล้วย กระถิน พริกขี้หนู มะกรูด เป็นต้น
ส่วนที่สี่ ร้อยละ 24 พื้นที่ประมาณ 3.7 ไร่ เป็นส่วนของที่อยู่อาศัย ถนนและเลี้ยงสัตว์ ตลอดจนการปลูกผักสารพิษเพื่อบริโภคในครัวเรือนและจำหน่ายเป็นการลดค่าใช้จ่ายและเสริมรายได้ในครัวเรือน

Wat Mongkol Chaipattana Royal-initiated Area Development Project
In 1988, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej asked Mr. Sumet Tantivejkul, Mr. Manoon Mookpradit, and Mr. Pimonsak Suvanathat, committee members of the Chaipattana Foundation, to purchase a piece of land adjacent to Wat Mongkol temple, Huai Bong Subdistrict, Muang District, Saraburi Province. Later, His Majesty changed the temple's name from Wat Mongkol to Wat Mongkol Chaipattana on 3 October, 1992.
The Chaipattana Foundation purchased the land and some people donated some pieces around the temple with the total area of 32-47 rai (acres) in order to develop the agriculture by applying the concept of the New Theory. The temple area is used to conduct the Wat Mongkol Chaipattana Royal-initiated Area Development Project to serve as the New Theory demonstration center. Farmers can adopt the concept and apply it to their own area, which will guide them to become self-reliant. It is the starting point of the first New Theory in Thailand.
The Project operation is divided into 2 areas:
Area 1: This area of 16-2-23 rai (acres) is designed to operate the integrated farming demonstration plot. The various kinds of backyard garden are studied and developed such as สวนพืชตระกูลมะ herbal plants garden, highland fruits garden, or สวนพรรณไม้หอมเฉลิมพระเกียรติ, as well as excavation of the pond to raise fish and vetiver grass cultivation to prevent soil erosion are conducted.
Area 2: Usually, the New Theory area is divided into 4 parts with the portions of 30:30:30:10. However, this area of 15-2-24 rai (acres) at the temple is adjusted according to the suitability of the areas conditions. The area then was divided again into new portions which are 16:35.5:24.5:24. Each portion comprises of:
Portion 1: Around 2.5 rai (1 acre) or 16 percent of the area was excavated to serve as a pond of 55 meters wide, 71 meters long and 5 meters deep. It can hold up to 18,000 cubic meters of water for consumption during dry season. Carp and Nile Tilpia fish can be raised in the pond to increase income.
Portion 2: Approximately 5.5 rai (acres) or 35.5 percent of the area was developed into a rice field. After the harvest, the soil was improved to grow farm plants, various kinds of vegetables such as sweet corn, bitter gourd, green beans, etc.
Portion 3: About 3.8 rai (acres) or 24.5 percent of the area is for other kinds of agriculture, for instance the cultivation of farm plants, fruit trees, perennial trees, and herbal plants, for daily consumption, and the surplus was for sale. The crops were selected to fit the environment and the market needs. The examples are sugar cane, banana, acacia, bird-chili, bergamot, etc.
Portion 4: Around 3.7 rai (acres) or 24 percent of the area is set for residential area, roads and animal raising, as well as organic vegetables growing for household consumption and for sale, which will lower the expenses and raise the family income.
